- I was going to EMail this, but because of all the moaning I've been sensing

- Hello, Doc -
- First, I would like to say that I am honored to know that Dr. Kittel is watching.
-
- No MMU, No FPU -
- C'mon Doc, the 68030 never has, never will contain an FPU. It's an MMU you are
- refering to ;)
-
- I believe neither one is often used by the average consumer. But an FPU can be
- slotted, a CPU swap is required to incorporate the MMU. You might look more
- carefully at this decision. Just the thought of running Virtual Memory appeals
- to me.
-
- Low Cost -
- Let's face it. Commodore made their money by producing low-cost computers, and
- selling them to hobbyists.
-
- Processing Power -
- I *believe* the '040 *is* significantly more expensive. The '040 _does_ contain
- both a MMU and a FPU.
-
- We can't blame AT for the price of the CPU. Motorola sets the price on the 68000
- series processors.
-
- Frugal Users -
- Many users won't even register a $10 shareware program. How can anyone think these folks
- would be willing to shell out another 20% for processing power they won't (don't think
- they'll) ever need? By the time they need more power they're ready for a new machine,
- especially if a new one is as affordable as the old one.
-
- Demanding Users -
- Sure, we all want the best of everything in the world, but reality rears it's ugly
- head, and we find ourselves continuously compromising. It's gonna take a lottery
- strike before I can get that Sun I've had my eyes on. In the meantime, I have more
- time than money, and if I have to wait for my computer to calculate, than I have
- to wait. In a couple of years I can save a lot of money on todays top-o'-the-line.
- Meanwhile, I can always sort socks.
-
- A1200 vs. A4000 -
- Just look at how many A500s and A1200s were sold compared to 3000/4000s. When an
- A1200 is $600US and a 4000 is more than thrice that, well, unless you need a 4000,
- and expect it to pay for itself, most people just can't afford it. By the time you
- put slots and an '040 in a tower for a 1200, you have a 4000. Any questions?
-
- FinalWriter -
- Amiga users pay 1/3 the price of a /professional/ word processor, and then some users
- are upset because it doesn't have every feature of the $X3 version. My wife thought
- I bought a new printer when I first showed her output from Final Copy. We should all
- remember that Final Copy started it's life as a word processor which would make your
- printed output look as good as possible on the cheap computers and printers we owned.
- Now everyone cries that it's too slow when it prints. Well, it always was slow, it's
- maximum quality. Take a shower while it prints. Relax.
-
- Moral -
- You only get what you pay for.
-
- Upgrade -
- One can always upgrade his machine as time demands, and money permits. I think AT
- *must* offer an introductory package. This is what will attracted us as first time
- buyers, and will attract more new users. "Please dear," I beg of my wife,"it's only
- $500. The kids can do homework on it, I can keep the budget, and games are cheaper
- than the PlayStation." If you use it for a couple of months you need a monitor. Then
- add some new software, a printer, more ram, etc.
-
- Thank you -
- For listening, I hope this makes sense to someone besides me.
